The Head of RNA Technology is in responsible for developing and driving the strategy and execution of the RNA technologies for the Vaccines Business Unit. This position leads a cross functional team of senior individuals and collaborators with diverse technical and scientific expertise in the highly specialized field RNA with a specialty focus in vaccines.
This position (a world’s expert in this field) is critical to develop, facilitate and implement a unified R&D Vision and Strategic Roadmap covering the entire R&D Value Chain assuring that Sanofi Pasteur becomes the leader in mRNA vaccines. This position significantly contributes to Sanofi Pasteur growth objectives and to Group leadership in vaccines.
This senior position reports to the Head of External R&D and Vaccine Platforms, and works in collaboration with leadership of relevant functional organizations within the Vaccine R&D Unit. The position will be responsible for proactively assessing the current state and future evolution of the RNA scientific technological and disease area landscape identifying best candidates for RNA Vaccines with subsequent development for licensure allowing for new and unserved targets. The position will interface with the R&D groups engaged in mRNA technology from the other Global Business units of Sanofi and identify technological and manufacturing synergies with these groups.

Internal Business Specifications: (40%)
This specialized area of expertise will develop, align and execute (Internal & Business Development Strategies & external Partnerships) the Sanofi Pasteur R&D innovative RNA Technology Department. This position will lead a cross-functional team responsible for implementing the mRNA platform for the vaccine programs.
The overall technologies for RNA nucleotide and formulation including LNPs are largely similar for siRNA and mRNA. LNP know-how for siRNA informs advances for mRNA. Utilizing both in vitro and in vivo RNA technologies will provide critical data to make informed decisions for our business. This key accountability includes utilizing relevant internal and world-wide expertise in this area leveraging network affiliations in this field.
External Accountability: (20%)
Provide scientific and technical leadership and identifies collaborations (from initial contacts and exploratory interactions through to Due Diligence activities) leading the short-term and long-term strategic scientific direction of Sanofi Pasteur R&D in the area of RNA Technology.
Monitors collaborations with a broad spectrum of internal and external groups and potential enabling partners relevant to our business , including Academic Institutions, Biotechnology Companies, Government Agencies, and larger vaccine and pharmaceutical companies to evaluate vaccine related RNA technology platforms and disease specific vaccine candidates.
Organizational Specifications: (15%)
Develop, lead, mentor and train (as appropriate) a transversal Global Team for licensing, technology evaluation and implementation of RNA technology for vaccines ensuring internal competencies are developed.

Works with External R&D and BD to identify and integrate opportunities to strengthen RNA investments. Records pertinent scientific, technical and business related information, including past and ongoing communications regarding external opportunities and their status
Context of the job/major challenges
The position has a global dimension as it supports all Sanofi Pasteur R&D sites worldwide; a cross-functional role both within R&D (PRD, R&NCS, and clinically), as well as working closely with Franchise and Vaccines Industrial Affairs. This position will work in coordination and liaise with Pharma R&D on their mRNA and siRNA partnerships and projects.
This position works in a multi-site global matrix structure with different functional and organizational responsibilities necessitating active and transparent communication and interactions working transversally across all functions in Sanofi Pasteur and engaging Sanofi and the other Global Business Units.
This position coordinates with the external environment including Biotech partnerships, academic alliances and government institutions. This position ensure there is alignment in R&D and engages the internal support functions outside of R&D (including intellectual property, legal, purchasing, Commercial Operations, public affairs and communications,) and including NV Project Teams, Research & Non-clinical safety and PRD.
This position plans resources, prioritization and resource reallocation to achieve the global mission and priorities for the contribution of RNA technologies for vaccines and in alignment with other Sanofi GBUs where we can leverage synergies on this topic.
The job incumbent will provide direct oversight to a cross-functional team (and impacts a large team in a matrix environment through influence) in 3 main countries (France, USA and Canada). This position leads a senior team of individuals with diverse technical, scientific and commercial expertise in the field of vaccines with a specific focus on RNA vaccine technologies.
This incumbent is accountable for the oversight and delivery of external partners who are in collaboration with Sanofi Pasteur for the RNA work.
Proactively assesses the current state and future evolution of the scientific technological and disease area landscape. Develops, facilitates and implements a unified RND R&D Strategic Road map covering the entire R&D Value Chain. Highly contributes to ensuring that Sanofi Pasteur remains the leader in immune interventions for Infectious Diseases specifically where RNA technologies gains competitive advantage in the marketplace. Significantly contributes to Sanofi Pasteur growth objectives and to Group leadership in biologics.
Ph. D. required within the area RNA Research and Technology activities including direct interaction with key external groups as well as experience in industry and academia.
Minimum 15 years total experience,
Published and world’s expert in RNA Technology relating to vaccine research
Minimum 10 years supervisory/management experience in matrix organization
